Two dozen villages in Palpa still deprived of basic communication facilities

What you should know

Two dozen villages in Palpa are still deprived of basic communication facilities. Telecom services are still not available in more than a dozen villages of Mityal, Galdha, Jhirubas, Sahalkot, and Jyamire in Nisdi Rural Municipality.

Some villages in Gothadi, Hattilung, Rahas and Bahadurpur of Mathagadhi Rural Municipality also do not have easy communication facilities. Places such as Kerabari and 24 Mile in Ward No. 5 of Tinau Rural Municipality are without communication connectivity. More than half a dozen settlements in Baldhengadhi, Satyawati and Juthapauwa of Rainadevi Chhahara Rural Municipality still have difficulty in communicating.

Apart from these, some settlements in the district do not have communication connectivity due to lack of telecom service. ‘We are without communication connectivity even in the highway area of Siddharth Highway,’ said Jog Bahadur Thapa of Kerabari, Tinau Rural Municipality-5, ‘We have had to complain to Nepal Telecom many times.’ All the Chief District Officers who come to Palpa have also been informed. The solution has not been found for years.'

There is a problem of telecom towers not being installed in the Kauledanda, Dharkesing, and Khadar areas of Nisdi Rural Municipality, which are known as major tourist destinations. In Rukshebhanjyang, where Nisdi Rural Municipality is located, it is compulsory to carry a mobile phone when going out. 'Let alone using 4G, there is a problem even with mobile phone contact,' said Saroj Kafle, the accounting officer of Nisdi Rural Municipality. 'If the weather worsens further, we will have to become contactless.' According to him, many residents of Nisdi villages have not been able to get easy communication facilities.'

Manorath Aryal, a local resident of Nisdi, has written an open letter to Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel, exposing the reality that basic communication facilities are still not available. He said on social media, ‘In many places in Nisdi Rural Municipality, Nepal Telecom’s ‘Namaste’ service is still not working. People reach the top of the mountain to search for a telecom service signal and sometimes mothers climb trees to hear their children’s voices. There is talk of ‘free Wi-Fi’ in the city, but even a phone signal has become a dream in the village.’

He mentioned that the condition of communication access in Wards 4, 5 and 6 of Nisdi Rural Municipality is pathetic and urged to take initiatives to repair the dilapidated towers of Nepal Telecom and build new towers. He demanded on social media that schools and teachers should be provided with cheap internet facilities and that equal communication rights should be ensured even in remote villages. ‘Nepal is alive not only in the city, but also in the mountains and villages. Please be the ears that hear the remote voices and bring the light of communication into our lives,’ he wrote.

According to Daman Bahadur Thapa Magar of Nisdi Rural Municipality-3, Dharkesing, despite the fact that the telephone tower has been in question for 10 years, it has not been resolved. ‘More than 500 tourists come to Kauledanda every day,’ he said, ‘they would call, use 4G, but they have to return as if they were disconnected.’ He said that most of the time, when the tower is sometimes lifted at his house, the easiest means of communication is Wi-Fi. He complains that despite informing the telecom chief, chief district officer, and political party leaders about this matter, no one has listened.

Hemant Kumar Lalkarna, head of Nepal Telecom Palpa, said that even if there is a complaint, a dive test should be conducted at least every three months, and complaints have been received from some places because it has not been done for a long time. ‘There has been a demand for a new BTS connection for the place where the tower has not been lifted,’ he said. He said that this year, new BTSs were connected in Purbakhola and Mathagadhi. He said that many problems will be solved once the Purvakhola is operational and the Mathagadhi is operational.
