Free cataract surgery for 242 people

The Rotary Club of Kawasoti organized free cataract surgeries for 242 people in East Nawalparasi.

After the increase in cataract patients due to lack of timely eye treatment in rural areas, eye examination camps were organized in villages and free surgery and treatment was provided to patients with the problem. Narayan Neupane, President of the Rotary Club of Kawasoti, said that out of 2,500 people who underwent eye examinations in partnership with Kawasoti Municipality and Hupsekot Rural Municipality, 242 were found to have cataract problems.

The surgery was performed at Madhyabindu Provincial Hospital with the technical assistance of the Tilganga Eye Institute. Out of the 80 patients who needed surgery, 80 could not undergo surgery due to high blood pressure and diabetes, and seven patients have been sent to the Tilganga Eye Institute for further treatment.

Dr. Vivek Bista's team from the Tilganga Eye Institute performed cataract surgery at the camp. The Rotary Club of Kawasoti has been running eye camps for six years.

So far, 25,000 people have been tested for their eyes, and 3,000 of them have undergone free cataract surgery, said Bharat Sharma Pokharel, the club's founding president. In the camps run by the club, cataract problems have been seen more in women than in men.
