Preparations are underway to extend the deadline for the three and a half kilometer road from Butwal's intersection to Golpark Chidiyakhola, which is polluting the main city of Butwal. The deadline for the road expansion work is being extended until next Chaitra after the first contract was cancelled and the work was not completed on time as per the agreement even through the second tender.
The 3.5-kilometer road expansion work from Chauraha to Chidiyakhola in Butwal began on Chaitra 17, 2073. In the initial contract, The Kanchenjunga Biruwa JV had signed an agreement with the government for 539.799 million rupees to complete the work by mid-Asoj 2076. After the road expansion work was delayed despite five extensions, the government terminated the first contract in Baisakh 2080.
After terminating the first contract, the government called for a second contract and entered into an agreement with Babul Darshan Malika JV to complete the work by Asoj 18, 2082. Although the contract agreement was for 330 million rupees including VAT, only 48 percent of the physical progress was made by the stipulated time, the deadline for the road expansion is being extended to complete the work by Chaitra 2082, said Maheshwor Lamsal, Information Officer and Engineer at the Road Division Office, Butwal.
‘We had signed a contract on 18 Asoj 2081 to complete the work within a year. Although the expansion work was progressing at a slow pace, some of the expansion work was delayed after the death of the construction entrepreneur Babul Khan, who had signed the contract,’ he said. ‘After the construction entrepreneur’s representatives, sons Trafik Khan and Nasif Khan, promised to complete the work in 6 months, we have moved forward with the process of extending the deadline until Chaitra.’ He said that with the extension of the deadline, the work will start after Tihar.
As the Chauraha-Chidiyakhola road section in the central part of Butwal Bazaar has been neglected for 9 years, businessmen and pedestrians on the roadside have been facing problems. Accidents have also increased when construction materials are left on the roadside. According to the Road Division Office, since the section from Chauraha to Chidiyakhola is the main area where various health institutions including the central market area of Butwal and Lumbini Province are located, it is being expanded with drains, three-meter-wide sidewalks, and service lanes.
The 3.5-kilometer section will have a service lane, and the service lane will be seven meters wide, the greenbelt and night stalls will be two and a half meters wide, and the main lane will be 10 and a half meters wide. Information Officer Lamsal said that more than 60 percent of the work on the construction of the drain and sidewalk has been completed. "Now we are trying to start the construction of the service lane, greenbelt and night stalls in a few days," he said. "Once the extension file is received, the work of urging the construction businessmen will begin." He said that 45 percent of the physical progress has been made in the road expansion so far.
