Pratappur Rural Municipality in West Nawalparasi has laid off 92 employees. The municipality has eliminated contract and salaried employees with a tax that will come into effect from Kartik 1.
Pratappur Rural Municipality Chairman Umesh Chandra Yadav said that 61 employees under the education department, 11 from the health department and 20 employees working in the municipality and ward offices have been removed. ‘The employees have had to be cut as per the circular from the center that says that salaried and contract employees should be cut and that only internal income should be used to provide facilities to contract and salaried employees,’ Yadav said, ‘Now we have a shortage of employees. The necessary employees and manpower should be arranged by the provincial and central governments.’
The municipality says that its internal resources are only 13 million and since it cannot pay salaries from the budget sent by the center, it cannot meet its expenses from internal income alone.
The central government has issued a circular saying that it will cut expenses and remove employees other than salaried and approved posts. Other municipalities in the district have also not implemented the cuts even though they have to cut employees as per the circular from the center.
