At one time there was a demand for pottery made by the Kumal community in the rural areas of the country. From water jugs to corn roasting pots, they made them. Khutruke (Bhudki), which collects money from clay pots for cold water, is still popular. The Kumal community, which has been making a living using traditional skills, is now in crisis.
They are in trouble after the increase in the use of iron and plastic utensils instead of clay in the market . The clay idols made by the Kumal community are still bought by foreigners. The demand for Mataka Cups (Batta) prepared by them is increasing now . The practice of drinking tea in clay cups is now famous as Matka tea in the city market. Seeing this attraction, Marchwari Rural Municipality of Rupandehi has prepared a skill promotion plan for Kumal community.
According to Upamanyu Tripathi, the chief administrative officer of the municipality, for the livelihood of about two dozen Kumal communities in the municipality, the commercial promotion of Mataka cups prepared by them is going to be done. "Tea is being sold in plastic cups in village tea shops," he said, "Now we are going to encourage all tea shops to sell tea in clay cups." You have to pay the same price while buying a plastic cup. ``The use of clay cups also helps in environmental protection,'' he said, ``The livelihood of the Kumal community in their own village also goes on.'' He said that after improving the traditional cycle which is in use now, it will become automatic after connecting the motor. Electricity will be supplied to the Kumal community to run such automatic cycles and the tariff will be discounted.
Gaya Prasad Barai, president of Marchwari rural municipality, also informed that a tea sale program has been introduced in Mataka cup to help the poor community. He said that a gathering of all the tea shops in the municipality will be organized for the sale of such cups. "After gathering all the tea shops and explaining the benefits of clay cups, a request will be made for mandatory use," he said. Since few years, plastic cups are being used because they are disposable. This has increased the pollution along with the appearance of garbage around the shop. On the other hand, President Barai said that the Kumal community will also be excited when the clay cups prepared by him start selling. "Such a program will also play a role in saving traditional skills," he said.
