7 thousand 175 trees in the road area were cut during the expansion of the 31 km road from Butwal Gorusinge on the East-West Highway.
During the expansion of the Butwal-Gorusinge road, more than 7,000 trees were cut down on the road section, and the roadsides along the highway were destroyed. After the cool shade of Barpipal disappeared, the roadside became deserted.
7 thousand 175 trees in the road area were cut down during the expansion of the 31 km road from Butwal Gorusing on the East-West Highway. Instead, the project has prepared to plant 70,000 trees through various forest division offices in the road area.
Although the project has paid 47.1 million rupees to the forest department for tree planting, the planting has not started. During the road expansion, hundreds of chouparis and historical trees prepared with personal investment have also been cut. There are no chaharis and chouparis to slow down passengers waiting for vehicles on the road. There were 7,000 trees of Swami, Mango, Kadam, Sal, Simal along with Var and Peepal along the Butwal Chandrauta road. They are all cut.
76-year-old Kalawati Gautam of Saina Maina Municipality-1 Murgia of Rupandehi planted a bride and peepal tree in Kalikachowk in 2041. She built a choupari 12 years ago at the place where the groom and the peepal were, spending 50,000 rupees. Locals also performed puja every Saturday at the var and peepal trees. People waiting for rides and others got the opportunity to cool down at the nearby square. However, now there is neither Chowpari nor Bar Peepal.
The people who were raised and protected by grief were cut down to make a road. She said, "They said they would plant later, but they haven't yet." She complains that the road is becoming rough if the cut trees are not planted. Kalawati is worried that there is no place to plant var and peepal trees on the side of the road as the road is big. "Now there is no place to plant trees," she said, "Even if we plant them somewhere, we cannot see them grow." For that, more than 1,000 var and peepal trees have been cut from the roadside from Butwal to Gorusinge. According to the Butwal-Chandrauta project office, during the road expansion, 2,613 trees were cut in Butwal sub-metropolitan and Sainamaina municipal areas of Rupandehi, and 1,326 trees were cut in Kanchan rural municipality area.
Similarly, project chief and engineer Kushalta Neupane said that 3,236 trees were cut in Kapilvastu's four and Gorusinge areas. "During the road expansion, 7 thousand 175 trees have been cut," she said, "the project has paid 47.1 million rupees to the forest department to plant the cut trees." She said that there was an agreement to plant 10 new trees equal to one cut tree, and the forest department will correspond with the road division for that.
The project has also paid the cost of protection of 71,000 trees to be planted for 5 years through the road division offices. During the expansion of the road from Butwal to Bhairahawa, from Bhairahawa to Lumbini, trees like var, peepal and mango, swami etc. on the roadside were cut down. However, even after 5 years of road construction, old species trees have not been planted on the roadside.
Environmental engineer Yuvraj Kandel says that while road construction or expansion of roads in developed countries is a priority for protection of roadside trees, there is no interest in that in Nepal. "In other countries, during the construction or expansion of roads, even if the trees fall within the area of the road, there is a practice of moving them and later bringing them to the side," he said. Karma attention can be seen in conservation. Not only in highways and cities, but also in road construction, roads will be constructed by removing var, peepal and chaupari in rural areas.
During the Butwal Narayanghat road expansion, nearly 100,000 trees were cut. In place of those trees, the forest department has started planting trees with the financial support of the project, but there is no planting work on Butwal Bhairawa, Butwal Gorusinge road.
Butwal Narayanghat Road Section Officer of Division Forest Office Madan Dhungana said that the work of planting new trees in different forest areas of Kapilvastu is in the final stage. "The work of planting new saplings in some partnership forests of Patna, Kotaria and Mayadevi Rural Municipality of Wanganga Municipality-10 of Kapilvastu has reached its final stage," he said.
Butwal Gorusinge road extension work has just started, he said that the work of planting new trees will start only after some time. Pravin Bidari, Senior Divisional Forest Officer of the Division Forest Office, Rupandehi, said that although efforts are being made to plant new saplings in Rupandehi, the work has not started due to lack of land.
"In Butwal Narayanghat section, Butwal Bhairahawa section and Bhairahawa Lumbini section, sufficient land has not been available for planting new saplings," he said, "Butwal Narayanghat road project is demanding at least 50 hectares of land. However, the land itself has not been available.
Chinese construction company Sansi Construction Engineering Group Corporation and Chitwan's Ashish Construction Services have signed a contract for the expansion of Butwal Gorusinge road for 13 billion 55 million 95 lakh 96 thousand rupees. Ashish Construction Services is doing the field work. Construction businessman Vijay Gowli said that work can be done within three years of the agreement.
The contract signed in June 2081 came into effect on November 4. The construction company started work from the second week of January. According to the project, about 13 percent progress has been made so far. "Under the project, 30 road bridges have to be constructed, out of which the foundation construction of 14 bridges has been completed and 9 diversion works are being done," she said, "After the completion of the foundation work, which takes the main time, now the bridge construction work has progressed rapidly." The project has been working by establishing a field office in Kapilvastu. In the first and second phase, the road will be extended from Butwal to Gorusinge section by 30 km in Rupandehi and 20 km in Kapilvastu.
In the first phase, work will be done on the 31 km section from Butwal to Gorusinge and in the second phase, the work will be done on the 19 km section from Gorusinge to Chandrauta. The second phase of the contract process has not yet taken place. According to the project office, out of 30 concrete bridges to be constructed, 20 in Rupandehi and 10 in Kapilvastu, the construction of 8 in Rupandehi and 5 in Kapilvastu is going on at full speed. The work of retaining wall and culvert construction is also accelerating. 149 culverts and 6 under passes/over passes will be constructed. This road will be 50 meters wide in urban areas, 37 meters wide in suburban areas and 24 meters wide in forest areas.
