Fear of theft during festival: night patrol started by locals

A few days ago, there was a theft at Garden of Drinks (GOD) at 5 Maitripath, Siddharth Nagar, Rupandehi. Ramesh Kandu, the owner, said that after looking at the footage of the CCTV camera in the restaurant, which is located near the road to the district administration office, it was seen that the theft took place at 12:20 in the night.

According to him, that night a man of about 40 years old broke the lock of the main gate of the restaurant and broke the counter and stole about one lakh rupees in cash. He said that he got information about the theft when the staff reached the restaurant at 9 am. He said the lock was found hanging on the gate.

As the festival is approaching, locals have started patrolling at night in various places of Rupandehi fearing an increase in theft incidents. Night patrols have been started because thefts and robberies at night pose a risk to people's lives and property.

A few days ago, an unknown group pasted leaflets in 2 houses in Siddharth Nagar-3. It was written in the leaflet that 'we are coming to steal in this village within a week, if we don't find any goods, we will kill them'. Manoj Kumar Prajapati, a local said that the pamphlet has created a lot of panic among the locals.

He informed the administration about it and said that from the same night they were divided into groups of 5 to 8 people and started patrolling. "We feel that it is our responsibility to protect the village," he said.

In 3 Betahani villages of Suddhodhan village in the district, the locals have been staying awake all night with sticks. Sagar Prasad Khanal said that the vigil will be held from 10 pm to 3 am. He said that as many as 12 people gathered in a group and were patrolling in their area.

``We have started patrolling to prevent theft, taking into account the possible incidents during the festival,'' he said. He said that the message that the people of the society are one can be conveyed while patrolling.

In Ward No. 5 of Tilottma, a patrol group has been formed through social media by creating a page called Tilottma 5 Security Force. Under the coordination of ward member Hira Giri (Diamond) of 5, it has been decided that the people of 8 villages will gather and work for security, meeting, discussion and night patrolling.

After the prisoner escaped from the prison during the Gen-G movement on August 24 last year, it has created panic among the citizens. Locals are alarmed by the information that more than 100 prisoners, including from Rupandehi, have escaped from prisons in other places. Locals say that the risk of criminal activity in the society has increased after the prisoner involved in the crime escaped.

The youth of Devdah municipality-1 of Rupandehi have also started patrolling at night. According to the locals, in order to prevent incidents of theft, robbery and violence, the young people who are active in the patrol have made a rule that the person who repeats the ohor after 10 o'clock in the night must show his identity card.

Suraj Karki, DSP of District Police Office Rupandehi, said that it is a positive thing that the people of the society have joined hands with the security agencies. He said that citizens can directly contact the police and get help if they are in trouble.

He said that so far there have been no widespread cases of theft in the district, so they are working hard to maintain this security. "The awareness of the locals is a positive energy for us," he said, "We are with the locals in the security of the district, we are also taking vigilance from the side of the security personnel to prevent theft."
