Erosion has not stopped due to the increase in the flow of water in the Karnali river due to the rain falling in the hilly areas. In Karnali on Tuesday morning, water is flowing above 8.14 meters. In Karnali, water flowing above 10 meters is generally considered high risk.
With the increase in water flow, the Karnali river is eroding in Vanghusra located in Geruwa village-2. Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police and locals have started labor donation from Monday afternoon to stop the erosion after the Karnali River washed away the embankment located in Geruwa Rural Municipality-2 Vanghusra. Temporary embankment has been started in Katan area by filling sand in sacks and cutting silage.
There is a problem with the temporary embankment due to the rising water level. Chief District Officer Surendra Paudel said that the temporary embankment work will continue on Tuesday as well. "Since the danger mark has not been crossed, the embankment work will be continued," he said.
District Disaster Management Committee member and Armed Police Superintendent Man Bahadur Shahi said that the locals along with 25 Nepali Army, 30 Armed Police and 25 Nepal Police personnel are building a temporary embankment. He said that there is a risk due to the rapid erosion of the river and continuous rains as well as the increased flow of water in Karnali.
More than half a dozen villages are at high risk due to river erosion. Irrigation and Water Resources Management Project Rajapur has informed that the erosion of Karnali has washed away about 300 meters of embankment. Geruwa-2 ward chairman Krishna Tharu said that the river erosion is rapid and the temporary embankment may also be washed away. He said that due to the embankment built on the river, the Karnali river has changed its course and the risk of flooding in Vanghusra, Vankatti, Sankatti, Tikuligarh, Loharpur and other settlements has increased.
After the embankment built 5 years ago in Bardia Geruwa-2 Vanghusra was washed away, the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police and locals have started filling sandbags and keeping them in Katan area.
