After the Karnali River washed away the embankment located in Geruwa Rural Municipality-2 Banghusra, more than half a dozen villages are at high risk. According to the Irrigation and Water Resources Management Project, Rajapur, about 300 meters of embankment has been washed away by the erosion of Karnali.
The embankment and spur, which were built about 5 years ago at a cost of 3 crores, have been washed away. Sudin Muktan, the head of the project, said that the length of the river was about 300 meters and the width was 3 meters.
2 meters out of 5 meters of embankment road has been cut, the risk of entering Karnali settlement has increased. "Cutting has not stopped," he said, "boulders (big stones) are not available during the rainy season for emergency embankment." Locals of Geruwa rural municipality-2 Banghusra are worried that floods will occur after the embankment is washed away.
As it has been raining continuously since Monday, the water level in Karnali is increasing. In the morning, the flow of water is 7.8 meters. Karnali floods when it reaches 10 meters. Krishna Tharu, Ward President of Geruwa-2, said that the river erosion is rapid.
Due to the embankment built on the river along with spurs, Karnali has changed its course and the risk of flooding has increased in the settlements of Banghusra, Bankattati, Sunkatti, Tikuligarh, Lohar etc. Locals allege that the river eroded easily due to poor embankment.
In order to temporarily stop the erosion of the river, on Monday, the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, and local representatives will fill sacks with sand and apples to make an embankment, said Zaman Singh KC, Chairman of Geruwa Rural Municipality. He said that the municipality will provide vehicles such as JCV, tractor etc. for this purpose.
