On the occasion of Badka Atwari festival, the Lumbini state government has given a public holiday in 6 districts where the Tharu community of Lumbini state resides on Sunday, August 8.

Krishna Prasad Nepal, Spokesperson and Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law, said that it was decided to make Sunday a public holiday in Dang, Banke, Bardia, Kapilvastu, Rupandehi and West Nawalparasi, where the Tharu community resides. The Badka Atwari festival, which is celebrated with importance in the Tharu community, falls on Sunday 8th of August this year.

It is customary for men of the Tharu community to fast on this festival. There is a cultural belief that this festival is celebrated by fasting and worshiping the sun.
