On the first day of Ashtimki, pictures of different colors are painted on the walls of Tharu village houses. In which worship is done. It is customary to draw various pictures in the house of senior members or Mahatwa of the village on the day of Krishna Janmashtami i.e. Ashtimki from early in the morning.
In the top line, the picture of the Pandavas starting to go to the forest, in the second line, the scene of them returning from the forest. And Krishna playing the flute sitting in the tree below. Within the large square painting there are symbolic scenes depicting many stories of Kushna. Ashtimki festival of Tharu caste starts with these pictures. Not everyone works like this because it takes special skills to make a
picture. People who make pictures should also fast. After taking a bath, painting starts in the morning. It is usually men who make pictures. Nowadays women are also trying to learn. Red, green and black colors are used in the picture. Colors are also made from local natural ingredients. Usually market colors are not used. The color is made by burning soil in red, bean leaves in green, and bamboo in black.
The customs of the Krishna era society are expressed in the picture. There is a picture of a cow because Krishna goes to graze cows, and there is a picture of an elephant and a camel in the belief that when he was born, he rode an elephant and a camel to call the Sudanese. There are pictures of rivers, fish, gangs and boats as the gopinis went to sell curd by boat.
Similarly, because Shivaji and Krishna do farming, bulls and plows are also in the picture. Gounthali's eyes and neck are made at the top of the picture. This is done because the bird is the friend of the Gounthali farmer. Gounthali does not eat any grain and instead helps the farmers by eating grain-eating insects.
This festival is celebrated for three days starting from the night before Shri Krishna Janmashtami. It is a tradition to eat Dar the previous day and fast on the day of Ashtimaki and make pictures from the morning. In the evening, all the women go to Mahatwa's house after lighting rice, jamir and lamps in tapri. After Mahatwa's wife starts wearing tika, other women also wear tika to the younger ones.
Topri leaves the lamp in Mahatwa's house and returns home, eats fruits and sings songs all night long. The following morning, it is customary for all the women to get together and put on tikas and line up to float the lamps in the river. Ashtimki is considered a festival especially for Tharu women.
At night, women gather at Mahatava's house and sing stories like Krishna seducing Gopini, Krishna destroying Kansha. After lighting candles in the river in the morning and returning, they prepare different types of vegetables and food dishes with odd numbers like 3, 5, 7. It is customary to serve this dish to brothers. Which is called progress.
Ashtimki paintings, which were once painted only on walls, can now be bought in the market. Instead of drawing pictures, bringing posters and throwing them is increasing. The trend of making it at home from local resources is disappearing. Tharu folk singer Bejlal Choudhary said that the shortage of people who make pictures and sing Ashtimki songs is also getting worse.
He complained that Ashtimki, an important festival of the Tharu caste, is becoming modern due to the lack of interest of the new generation in traditional practices. Tharu Mahatwa Sangh district president Chandra Prasad Chaudhary said that its cultural and religious values have been ignored. He said that in addition to discussing love in Ashtimki festival, family and social unity messages are also given.
