Rupandehi-based tourism professionals, industrialists and stakeholders have demanded that the issue of Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa be raised effectively during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's upcoming visit to India.
They have demanded to make the issue of air route and Instrumental Landing System (ILS) operation necessary for the airport before the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandes.
Lumbini Province President of Hotel Association Nepal Chandra Prakash Shrestha said that since there are rumors that India is obstructing the operations of Gautam Buddha International, which was built in the border town, it should be made clear during the Prime Minister's visit. "We have prepared a delegation to go from Bhairahawa to Kathmandu to inform about the problems related to tourism including the operation of the airport," he said.
Tourism businessman Asha Gurung said that it is necessary to operate the airport anyway. "If the airport is not operational now, we investors will die," he said, "therefore, the issue of airport operation should be given importance during the Prime Minister's visit to India." He demanded to save the lives of businessmen even if it is not possible to fly to distant countries. Another tourism businessman, Bishnu Sharma, said that 4/5 of the daily flights from Gorakhpur in India near Bhairahawa are filled with Nepalese passengers. "At least we should be connected with the cities of India," he said, "for that, India should be made positive."
General Manager of Gautam Buddha International Airport, Prataba Babu Tiwari, informed that connectivity can be increased even if it is by regional flights to various cities in India. 'Different cities in India are the most suitable destinations for regional flights from Bhairahawa,' he said, 'This issue should be prioritized during the Prime Minister's upcoming visit to India.'
