Four villages of Gularia municipality-10 are at high risk after the flood in Babai river receded on Tuesday. Locals said that the river has eroded by about 10 meters till Wednesday.

The embankment constructed by the Babai, Bhada Aurahi River Management Office is also vulnerable to erosion. The office has been shifted to Dadeldhura from July 1st as the project is planning to build an embankment in this area. After the transfer of the project, the embankment work in this area has been affected.

Deepak Choudhary, a farmer of Gulria municipality-10, said that if the cutting does not stop, Babai will change the direction and Nayapuruwa, Rangipur, Jhagrupur and Ratnapur will be at high risk. He said that more than 40 bigha of arable land of local farmers has been cut in the last five years.

This year, the flood on July 20 has started erosion. Raghuveer Mallah, a local resident, said that since the rainy season lasts until October, there is a fear of crop destruction. "The government has made a big mistake by transferring the work of Babai, Bhada, Aurahi river management projects to other places without completing them," he said.

The village near the Nepal-India border produces rice, mustard, wheat, vegetables and corn. The villagers have been demanding that a permanent embankment should be built to prevent river erosion. The plan to start the embankment work from the current year is incomplete after the transfer of the project.

Locals say that there is a high risk because the river erosion is changing its course from the south of this area. Five years ago, three border posts on the Nepal-India border were washed away near this village. This year there is no big flood yet . Ramesh Lodh, a local, said, "Rangipur and Ratnapur have been hit by floods like 071 and 074, and the risk of major damage has increased."
