A joint team of the Armed Police and the Nepal Police has arrested 124 drug dealers near the Nepal-India border in Baghaiyatal Rural Municipality since last July.
Badhaiyatal rural municipality of Bardia, which is connected to the border with India, is becoming a drug hub. Bharaiyatal rural municipality-2 passes through Footaha and reaches Indian market Balaigaon market. About 500 meters pass through the forest of India and reach Balaigaon. It is mentioned in the police data that not only from Bardia, but also from Jumla, Dailekh, Tanahun, Rupandehi, Banke and other districts come to buy brown sugar which is freely available in Balaigaon.
Nepal is considered an easy destination for drug dealers and users of brown sugar due to its open border with India and dense forests. The police have arrested 22-year-old Paras Tharu of Banke Baijnath Rural Rural Municipality-4 Tilakpur with a brown powder that looks like brown sugar. The police said that 1 gram and 540 milligrams of the substance was found at the check post located in Baghaiyatal Rural Municipality-2 Futaha on Sunday passing through Balaigaon.
On the same day, 26-year-old Suraj Sunar of Madhuvan Municipality-7 and 27-year-old Sumit Vick were arrested with 1 gram and 220 milligrams of brown sugar from Balaigaon in Kanthpur, India. A few days ago, 38-year-old Yuvraj Paudel of Basgadhi Municipality-5 Basgadhi Bazar found 400 milligrams of the substance in 2 pouches tied with blue thread in yellow plastic inside a green tobacco box.
According to Rajesh Sahu, Police Inspector of Area Police Office, Mainapokhar, 124 drug suspects have been arrested this year. "During the same period, we have seized 130 grams of 320 milligrams of brown sugar, 12 kilograms of hashish, 160 grams of hashish, and 16 grams of 44 grams of gaja," he said.
After being detained beyond capacity, 13 more people have been kept in the district police office and prosecuted. Last year, 118 people, including a woman, were arrested for the drug brown sugar. Area Police Office Mainapokhar arrested brown sugar 130 grams 550 milligrams during the same period. During the same period, 32 kg of hashish and 871 grams were recovered.
Gularia and Madhuvan municipalities are considered to be drug hubs after Baghaiyatal rural municipality. DSP Chakra Damarpal, Information Officer of District Police Office, Bardia, said that 183 drug dealers have been arrested since last July in Baghaiyatal rural municipality and other districts. DSP Pal said that 199 people were arrested for transporting drugs including brown sugar, hashish, ganja and other drugs in the year 080/081. Due to the police activity, the police claim that drug dealers and users have started to be caught.
Due to the fact that the Indian police did not take action against the traders of brown sugar, Indian markets Balaigaon and Laukahi have become easy destinations for Nepali youth. According to Indian law, no action can be taken even if up to 10 grams of brown sugar is caught. If it is more than that, the case will be registered in the scope of action, said the Indian police officer.
