The Chief Minister of Lumbini Province, Chetnarayan Acharya, has said that preparations are underway to introduce the Vadghar Act to give legal recognition to the traditional social structure of the Tharu community, the 'Vadghar System'.

Chief Minister Acharya said that during the discussion held with representatives of the Tharu community of Banke district at the office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers in Deukhuri on Wednesday, the process of making the law will be carried forward soon.

Chief Minister Acharya expressed his respect for the importance of the Wadghar system and informed that preparations are being made to bring the Wadghar Act after completing the necessary study, consultation and lawful process. He said that the government is moving towards a prosperous and just transformation of the society by connecting the traditional structure of the community with the modern governance system.

'The government has given special priority for the preservation and promotion of the art, culture, language and script of the Tharu community,' he said, 'The government has a clear policy to bring the backward communities into the mainstream of the state by bringing programs focused on the districts where the Tharu community is densely populated.'

During the discussion, representatives of the Tharu community of Kohalpur Municipality of Banke District submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister  They demanded that the Wadghar system, which is a practice of social justice, collective decision-making process, reconciliation and prosperous symbiosis, should be protected, institutionalized and strongly advanced by the provincial government. As mentioned in the

memorandum, the Wadghar system has played an important role in peace and order, mutual cooperation, social solidarity and local development in the community. Village-level wadghar committees have been active on the basis of identity, tradition and participatory leadership.
