There is a vacancy in the Lumbini State Assembly. After absenting herself in 10 consecutive meetings, the state assembly took action and dismissed Geeta Gurung, who was elected from Janmaat Party. Earlier, she announced that she had resigned through her husband Kailash Gurung while staying in the UK.
Gurung has been living in Britain with her son for the last 2 and a half months without informing the provincial assembly. She released a handwritten resignation letter on May 30 through the media. After absenting himself in 11 meetings of the sixth session of the Provincial Assembly, the Provincial Assembly is going to inform that the post is vacant after completing the necessary procedures. Chandrakesh Gupta, the leader of the parliamentary party of the Janmaat Party, where Gurung was elected, sent a letter to Speaker Tularam Gharti on Tuesday, requesting him to vacate the position after completing the necessary legal procedures as he was absent from 10 consecutive meetings. According to the Secretary of the Provincial Assembly, Durbham Kumar Pun, it is to be informed that one post of the Provincial Assembly is vacant according to Clause (d) of Article 180 of the Constitution of Nepal. He said that a possible agenda has been decided to give this information in the 11th meeting of the Provincial Assembly on Wednesday. Clause (d) of Article 180 of the Constitution states that the position of a member of the Provincial Assembly shall be vacant if he is absent from ten consecutive meetings without giving notice to the Provincial Assembly.
Based on that, according to sub-rule 1 of Rule 190 of the State Assembly Rules 2079, it is mentioned that 'if the seat of any member of the Assembly becomes vacant, the Speaker shall inform the Assembly of that matter'. According to the rules of the state assembly, it is going to be informed that Gurung's seat is vacant in the state assembly meeting on Wednesday. Lumbini State Assembly has 87 members.
Gurung is the member of the state assembly who attends the least in the Lumbini state assembly. Out of 83 meetings up to the fifth session, Gurung attended only 34 meetings. The Secretary of the Provincial Assembly said that he was continuously absent in the 10 meetings of the sixth session on Tuesday.
