Residents of the banks of the Danav River in Suddhodhan Rural Municipality of Rupandehi have accused the rural municipality of neglecting the impact of the excavation of the Danav River on the surrounding communities.
They say that the rural municipality contracts annually for the extraction of river materials in the Danav River to increase its income source, but they are not interested in implementing the agreement made with the locals for the reduction and solution of the damage caused by the excavation.
Residents of the banks of Danav River located in Ward No. 1 and 6 of Suddhodhan Rural Municipality have alleged that the Barseni River is being exploited during the extraction of river materials and that the rural municipality is not interested in controlling the erosion of the riverside land due to the mining.
"Due to the annual mining of river materials in Danav river, the farms of the locals on the banks of the river have been turned into bogs due to erosion and the process continues," Jit Bahadur Rana, a 66-year-old resident of Suddhodhan-6 for the past six decades, said, "The village earns money by mining the river but does not pay attention to river control and embankment to protect the local farms from erosion." The river has turned more than 60 bighas of the local farms into bogs. Contrary to the norms and rules, the village council and the regulatory body do not monitor and take action even when the contractor exploits the river overnight using machines.
Due to the cutting of Danav river, the entire village except one house has been displaced in Balwa village.
On Tuesday, the local people of that area gave a site visit to the affected area about the impact of the mining in Danav River and the actual situation.
As the surface of the river deepens due to indiscriminate exploitation, the water sources in the nearby settlements are drying up, irrigation problems are occurring, large gaps are created on the nearby village roads due to water leakage, crop erosion is increasing every year, concrete bridges built on the river are at risk, etc., the locals said.
They have also alleged that the responsible public representative of the rural municipality and the contractor are exploiting the river and extracting the river material.
Shambhu Chauhan, a resident of Suddhodhan-1, said that in order to control the risk caused by river mining, the village representative agreed to stop illegal mining of embankment, road construction, black sheeting and maintenance on the river bank, but neglecting the implementation. Accused of doing it.
"On the contrary of some responsible people's representatives, the river is exploited in collusion with the contractor," Chauhan alleged.
Keshav Prasad Adhikari, spokesperson of Suddhodhan rural municipality and chairman of ward No. 4, said that 25 percent of the total revenue received from the contract for river products will be allocated to the respective ward and the river erosion control has been done according to the demand of the locals.
"We have not allowed any excavation work to be carried out against the standards and we have also taken action against the contractors who are doing mischief," he said.
