The two-day Lumbini World Heritage Conference in Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, began on Wednesday. Archaeologists, heritage experts, researchers and local public representatives are participating in the conference organized to inform about the work done to remove Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, from the endangered list of world heritage sites.
In the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Delhi last July, the conference has been held here as the government committed to hold an international conference with the participation of experts, archaeologists and heritage experts to save Lumbini from the list of possible threats. In the
conference, it is said that information will be given about the work that has been/done according to the recommendations made by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. In the conference, Lumbini Province Chief Minister Chetnarayan Acharya said that Lumbini, the center of world faith, should not be put on the danger list by UNESCO as there are many improvement works.
'The shortcomings of the past have now been made heritage-friendly with many improvement efforts', he said, 'Now Lumbini will become a world destination.' In the conference, the union, state and local levels have pledged to work together to protect the archaeological heritage. On the first day of the
conference, Binod Prakash Singh, Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Nepal Focal Person of UNESCO World Heritage Center Dr. Roland Lin, Professor Archaeologist at Durham University, UK. Rabiv Cunningham, Lumbini Development Fund Vice President Lyaharkyal Lama, UNESCO Nepal's Nava Basnet Thapa, Indian Embassy Representative Garima Nutiyal, Archeology Department Spokesperson Ram Bahadur Kunwar, Kapilvastu Municipality Mayor Sudeep Poudel, Lumbini Development Fund Member Secretary Sanuraja Shakya and Lumbini Province Member Sike Gupta spoke. Experts from Britain, Japan, France, India, Nepal and Germany are participating in the
program.
