The Gandharva community in Kohalpur municipality of Banke is learning to play sarangi for cultural promotion. Most of the women are participating in the training. For the first time in Nepal, it is hoped that the training will enable women to play sarangi.

Women are also interested in playing sarangi, so training is provided. With the aim of promoting culture for the endangered Gandharva community, a 6-day sarangi playing training was organized by Kohalpur Municipality.

Ishwari Prasad Vishwakarma, coordinator of Kohalpur Municipality Social Development Committee, said that it is the responsibility of the local government to promote the culture of the Gandharva community.

'Recently, the Gandharva community needs to modify its profession according to the times, it should be carried out commercially, not just in the home and street market as before,' he said, 'Those who are economically poor and socially backward now need to create an identity through their art.' He said that he believed that the culture of the Gandharva community and sarangi playing training would bring more relief to the Gandharva community.
