Due to lack of timely rains, the production of wheat in Rukum East has decreased this year. Farmers here are worried after the production of wheat as the main crop under the winter crop has decreased.
Farmers are complaining that the production is less than half of last year due to lack of timely rain. Chan Bahadur Khatri of Sisne Rural Municipality-3, Pokhara, said that from the land that produced 20 pathi last year, this year only 5 pathi was produced.
'If it rained on the side, the crops would be destroyed . But after October, it suddenly fell into February . Since the wheat had dried up by that time, he said, the water that fell in the bucket had the opposite effect even on the little ones. And it's like counting the grains of wheat.'
It is not only Pokhara that does not have irrigation facilities and is farming under sky water, but the production of winter crops has decreased this year in the highlands and the Himalayas.
Champa Khadka, another farmer of Pokhara, said that they are facing more difficulties due to the continuous changes in the weather while bringing in the wheat crop. "It rained when the wheat was harvested and the kernels were extracted - it is enough". Dilliraj Paudel, head of the Integrated Agriculture and Livestock Development Office Rukum East, said that the hailstorm also affected farming. According to him, wheat is cultivated in an area of 32 hundred and 13 hectares in East Rukum. The main winter crops here are mustard and lentils along with wheat. It is seen that wheat production will be less this year due to lack of year. But the production of mustard and lentils is fine," he said.
Stating that the data collection is underway on how much wheat production has decreased this year, Chief Paudel said that there may be a food shortage in the district.
