Minister of Social Development of Lumbini Province Janmjay Timilsina has said that 70 percent of cases of sexual violence occur within the home.
Speaking at an awareness program against socially harmful practices, gender discrimination and violence organized by the Ministry of Social Development, Women's Empowerment Project in Tilottama on Saturday, he said that apart from that, 23 percent of incidents are caused by other members of the household.
He also said that the enthusiastic participation of women in the campaign against gender violence is important. Minister Timilsina said that violence is due to women being uneducated, marrying at a young age and marriage due to family pressure. "In our province, the female literacy rate is good in terms of percentage," he said.
He said that Tilottama municipality is preparing indicators and making it a gender-friendly municipality. "If everyone makes an effort, there will definitely be a reduction in cases of sexual violence in the province," he said.
Ramakrishna Khan, head of Tilottama city, said that such programs against gender violence are effective for the society.
