The purchase of paddy in Rajapur, the food and processing trade center, which started last October, is only 38 percent till the third week of January. This year, the purchase of paddy was one lakh quintal. According to Ram Kamal Pandey, head of the main branch of the business center, Rajapur, about 38,000 quintals of paddy has been purchased till 24th of January.

"There is no condition to reach the rice purchase target," he said, "hardly one hundred quintals can be purchased." According to the Integrated Agriculture and Livestock Development Office, paddy production has increased in Bardia this year. In the

district, rice is cultivated in an area of 51 thousand 100 hectares. About 235,000 quintals of paddy have been produced this year. Sagar Dhakal, Head of Agriculture and Livestock Development Office, said that 225,450 quintals were produced last year.

Although the production of rice has increased, the purchase in the food and business center has decreased. It is estimated that the decrease is due to the traders buying at will. Chetman Kathayat, the information officer of the food system center, said that there is a decrease in the purchase due to the fact that the businessmen give fertilizer and advance money to the farmers during the rice planting season. He said that 16,000 quintals were purchased last year and this year it has increased. Last year, the government fixed the price of coarse rice at 3,198 and Makwanpur rice at 3,500. This year, coarse rice has been fixed at 3,400 rupees and medium 3,580 rupees, while Makwanpur rice has been set at 3,800 rupees.
