With the continuous rains in the hilly areas, the water flow in the Mahakali River in Kanchanpur is increasing. On Sunday morning, the water flow in the Sharda Barrage (Mahakali River) was around 35,000 cusecs, and as of the afternoon, it has increased to close to 60,000 cusecs, informed Kanchanpur Chief District Officer Madan Koirala. According to him, due to the continuous rains in the hilly areas, there is a possibility that the river flow may increase further. Therefore, residents of the coastal areas around the Mahakali River have been urged to exercise necessary caution, avoid unnecessary movement along the river banks, and follow the information issued by the local administration and security agencies.
The administration has appealed to the general public not to fish, cross the river, and do risky activities along the river banks, to move to a safe place if necessary, and to immediately inform the local administration or security agencies in case of any emergency.
Similarly, the Kanchanpur administration has stated that surveillance has been increased in coastal settlements, low-lying areas, and flood-prone areas along the Mahakali. Chief District Officer Koirala informed that the local level, security agencies and disaster management related mechanisms have been kept in a state of necessary readiness.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in most parts of the Sudurpaschim Province from July 3 to 5. According to the department, due to continuous rainfall, water levels in small rivers, streams and canals may rise suddenly, causing the risk of inundation and erosion, and high alert has been requested.
