Writer and columnist Keshav Dahal's novel 'Itha' has been launched. Bhushita Vasishtha of the

program presented a thought-provoking discussion on the novel. She did not limit Itha to just a historical narrative, but interpreted it from the perspective of Eastern philosophy. She says that 'Itha' is a powerful expression of history, struggle, and women's self-respect.

Vasishtha especially compared the female characters in the novel to the concept of 'power' of Eastern philosophy, stating that they stand as symbols rather than just characters. She said that the courage, rebellion, and humility seen in those women are not just personal qualities but are a part of a broader cultural consciousness, which she says will inspire the reader to rethink their existence and freedom.

‘The flow of the story of Itha, the self-struggle of the characters and the decisive stand they take have touched me from the inside,’ she said, ‘I recommend this book to all of you as a must-read book. We rarely get to read such a beautifully and elegantly written novel.’

During the discussion, she recalled the standard set by ‘Vaishali Ki Nagar Vadhu’ in Indian literature and evaluated ‘Itha’ as a work that can have the same level of impact.’

‘Vaishali Ki Nagar Vadhu’ had set a new standard by deeply depicting society, culture and human relations despite being based on the historical setting in India,’ she said, ‘Itha’ also has the potential to set new heights in Nepali literature.’

The artists of Shilpi Theater presented a song play based on ‘Itha’ in the program. They acted as the characters of the novel Vasudha, Lakha, Dhanyavati, Nayantara, Saurandri, etc.

What is in ‘Itha’?

The novel ‘Itha’, based on the historical, mythological and legendary environment of about two thousand four hundred years ago, has artistically presented the topic of how the Lichchhavis from Vaishali reached Manjupattan and defeated the Saumars and established a new kingdom.

How did the Lichchhavis from Vaishali reach Manjupattan and defeated the Saumars and established a new kingdom? Many novels can be written on this question. One of the many novels that should be written is the novel, Itha, which centers around three women—the symbol of courage, rebellion and humility.

Fighting the storm of war, love and persecution and protecting their dreams, they climb up from the Ganges plains. They have an infinite desire and promise of freedom. Ultimately, those promises lead them to a point where they have to make a decision and the kingdom is overthrown in Manjupattan. From that foundation, a new kingdom of the Lichchhavi is born.

This is a supernatural novel written by weaving together the history, stories and legends of about two thousand four hundred years ago. And yes, a powerful manifesto for women's freedom and self-respect.

Dahal's first published work is Nepali Rajinikanthko Punargathan (2073). His second work, the novel Mokshbhoomi, received the Padma Shri Literary Award in 2077. Her third work is the essay collection Madhavi O Madhavi (2079), while Itha (2082) is her fourth published work and second novel. Itha is published by Fineprint.
