Devkota's 'Munamadan' is the most sold book published in Nepali language to date.
The 117th birth anniversary of great poet Laxmi Prasad Devkota is being celebrated today with various programs organized at home and abroad. He was born in 1966 on the day of Kartik Krishna Aunsi, i.e. Laxmi Puja, in Dillibazaar, Kathmandu.
Devkota, who started writing poetry at the age of 10, has published many epics, short stories, essays, stories, plays, novels, songs, criticism and short poems. Devkota's 'Munamadan' short story, which started the writing of modern epics in Nepali literature, is the most sold book published in Nepali language so far.
Devkota, the founder of the liberal-progressive trend in Nepali literature, reflects humanism, love of nature and revolution in his works. His works combine Eastern and Western philosophy. The great scholar of India, Rahul Sankrityayan, compared Devkota alone to the combined form of the great poets of India, Sumitranandan Pant, Jayashankar Prasad and Suryakant Nirala. The great dramatist Balkrishna Sama said that Devkota was born three times with the epic 'Munamadan', the epic 'Shakuntal' and the poem 'Pagal'.
He also made significant contributions to the global promotion of Nepali literature by translating Nepali works into foreign languages and representing Nepal at various conferences held abroad.
The great poet Devkota himself translated the poem 'Pagal' into English. He has Nepalized many epics from Western Greek sources.
