The District Land Problem Resolution Committee Jhapa has accelerated the campaign to distribute land ownership certificates (Lalpurja) to landless Dalits, landless squatters, and unorganized settlers.
In the past week, a total of 23 families from Arjundhara Municipality, Buddhashanti Rural Municipality, and Kankai Municipality have received Lalpurja certificates.
On Friday, land ownership certificates were distributed to five families of Kankai Municipality–3 in a program. Among those who received the certificates, one family is landless Dalit and four families are unorganized settlers. The Lalpurja certificates were handed over to them by Shambhu Prasad Dhakal, Member of the House of Representatives from Jhapa Constituency No. 4.
Earlier, on Thursday, land ownership certificates were distributed to 18 landless Dalits, squatters, and unorganized settlers of Arjundhara Municipality–11. The certificates were jointly handed over by Indira Ranamagar, Member of the House of Representatives from Jhapa Constituency No. 2, Chief District Officer Shivaram Gelal, Arjundhara Municipality Mayor Baldev Singh Gomden Tamang, and Deputy Mayor Khadgamaya Parajuli Lamichhane.
Before that, on Asar 29, five unorganized settler families of Buddhashanti Rural Municipality had also received Lalpurja certificates. With the receipt of the Lalpurja, locals who had not had land ownership in their names for a long time have now obtained a legal basis to become landowners.
Speaking at the program, MP Ranamagar noted that people have an emotional connection with land and urged the recipients to protect and make proper use of the land after receiving the certificates. Arjundhara Municipality Mayor Tamang stated that resolving land problems within the municipality has been given top priority and expressed his commitment to distribute Lalpurja certificates to all genuine beneficiaries during his tenure.
Chief District Officer and Chairperson of the District Land Problem Resolution Committee, Shivaram Gelal, said that work is progressing according to the target of distributing Lalpurja certificates to all landless Dalits, landless squatters, and unorganized settlers in Jhapa under the government's 600-day action plan. He stated that, by coordinating among wards, local levels, the district, and the center, all genuine beneficiaries will be provided certificates within the stipulated timeframe by resolving the issues that arise.
According to Shiv Prasad Lamsal, Chief of the Survey Office Bhadrapur and Member Secretary of the District Land Problem Resolution Committee, the process of surveying, documentation, and certificate distribution is being rapidly advanced in all local levels of the district.
According to Land Section Chief Chudamani Niraula, so far, 444 people in Arjundhara Municipality have been distributed land ownership certificates. In Arjundhara–1, about 125 certificates are in the preparation stage, while the distribution process for about 42 families in Arjundhara–2 is in its final phase.
The District Land Problem Resolution Committee has stated that, under the government-led campaign, the work of legally granting land ownership to genuine landless and unorganized settlers will be further intensified in the coming days.
