Panchthar and Ilam District Administration Offices have banned vehicle operations at night due to the increased risk of possible floods, landslides, and road accidents following incessant rains.
Based on the forecast of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and the information of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, both districts have issued separate notices urging citizens to adopt high alert.
The Panchthar District Administration Office has announced that vehicle operation has been suspended on the main and internal roads of the district from 7 pm on Saturday to 3 am on Sunday.
Chief District Officer Basudev Dahal, in a press release, said that night traffic will be completely closed on the Mechi Highway, Tamor Corridor, Pushpalal (Mid-Hill) Highway, Phidim-Falot, Ranke-Rabi Road, Jorsal-Memeng Road and other roads.
Local levels, however, have been told that they can also suspend vehicle operation on other roads within their respective areas if necessary.
Similarly, the Ilam District Administration Office has also decided to close all roads in the district, including the Mechi Highway and Mechi Corridor, from 7 pm to 5 am on July 2 and 3, in view of the rainy conditions. This arrangement has been implemented as per the decision of the District Security Committee meeting.
The Panchthar administration has urged residents of the riverbanks to stay away from areas near rivers, creeks and streams that may experience sudden floods, not to use roads at risk of landslides and to be especially vigilant. Security agencies, local levels, volunteers and related agencies have been instructed to be prepared for possible rescue and response.
The administration has also requested that equipment including dozers, excavators and others be kept ready on risky roads and that all agencies involved in preparedness and response continue to coordinate.
The administration has urged the general public to call the Disaster Assistance Number 1145, Nepal Police 100, Armed Police Force 1144 and the Nepal Army contact numbers if necessary.
After the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology pointed out the possibility of heavy rainfall in various parts of the hilly and Terai regions of the country, including Koshi Province, both district administrations have decided to suspend night vehicle operations as a precautionary measure to minimize human and material damage. The administration has requested everyone to avoid night travel except for essential purposes and to follow official instructions.
