More than Rs 4.8 million in cash has been recovered from Ilam Jail. A joint team of the District Administration Office and Nepal Police raided the jail on Wednesday evening and recovered the amount.
According to Chief District Officer Laxman Dhakal, more than Rs 4.8 million in cash was found kept by three people, including the jail warden, the watchman and an inmate. According to Dhakal, 24,000 Indian rupees are also among the recovered amount.
Dhakal said that a detailed investigation has been launched into the source of the recovered amount. However, the inmates have claimed that they themselves gave the money to the watchman and the warden.
If the money is confirmed to have come from a legitimate source after the investigation, it will be returned to the person concerned, said Chief District Officer Dhakal.
'An investigation is underway into how such a large amount of money was collected from the three people inside the jail,' Dhakal said.
The police raided the prison based on a specific tip-off about illegal money. Police said the cash was recovered from room number 7 of the prison during the raid.
The District Administration Office said that further investigations have been initiated into the source of the seized money, possible illegal transactions and financial activities within the prison.
