Floods caused by heavy rains have washed away a funeral pyre in the Tamor River at Mulghat in Dhankuta. The flood has also affected two other pyres.
Among them, the funeral pyre of 43-year-old Gauri Rokka of Dhankuta Municipality-6 was swept away by the flood before it could be saved by the sailors.
Rokka, who had gone to Malaysia for foreign employment, passed away twelve days ago. Janardan Ghimire, general secretary of the Vishranti Temple in Mulghat, said that the flood swept away the body while it was being brought from Malaysia on Sunday. He informed that the water level on the river bank was initially normal and the body was being cremated when the flood suddenly swept away the body.
Deepak Pokharel, principal of Triveni Mavi, who was also an eyewitness, said that efforts to save the body could not be made due to the extremely rapid flood. 'High caution should be exercised during the rainy season,' he said, 'The sailors were fortunately saved.' The funeral pyre along with Rokka's 75 percent burnt body was swept away. The deceased Rokka had gone to Malaysia three years ago.
Before Rokka's body, the funeral of Radhika Niraula of Dhankuta-9 was being carried out. The mourners said that the flood affected them again while they were carrying out the funeral and cremating the body on another pyre. The flood wave also caused a stampede among the mourners. The family had barely carried out the body and completed the funeral by making another pyre.
Similarly, the funeral pyre of the deceased Chandrakala Adhikari of Chhathar Jorpati-2 was also affected by the flood. Although there have been sporadic incidents of this kind before, this is the first time that the funeral pyre has been carried away, said Janardan Ghimire, general secretary of Vishranti.
Meanwhile, Chief District Officer Rudra Devi Sharma said that the administration has immediately mobilized Nepal Police and Armed Police Force in the incident of the body being washed away in Mulghat. She also informed that police have been mobilized for the safety of the deceased.
