After ruling party lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction and the government pledged to correct the imbalances seen in the budget, the Koshi Province government’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2083/84 was passed by a majority in the provincial assembly on Wednesday.
Some of the plans included in the budget were criticized by lawmakers from the ruling party itself as being unbalanced and distributed based on access. Following this, the Chief Minister and relevant ministers admitted there were shortcomings in the budget and pledged to make necessary amendments and adjustments by withdrawing certain programs.
To ensure the budget’s passage, the government issued a whip to its own ruling party lawmakers from UML and Congress through their parliamentary parties.
Minister for Economic Affairs and Planning, Bidur Kumar Lingthep, had presented a budget of 40 billion 44 crore 98 lakh rupees to the provincial assembly on Asar 1. However, ruling party lawmakers themselves protested, accusing the Chief Minister and ministers of unilaterally selecting projects during the budget formulation process, resulting in an unbalanced budget.
Due to dissatisfaction within the ruling party, even the regular discussions on the budget were affected. To resolve the dispute, the government formed a task force comprising six lawmakers from the ruling party.
Following the task force’s recommendations, Minister Lingthep pledged to make necessary amendments and maintain balance in the controversial and unbalanced programs before the budget was passed.
