Dharan's smart bus park, which was envisioned about two decades ago, has finally come into operation. The smart bus park, built under the Tinkune Sundar Basti Development Project in Dharan Sub-metropolitan City-8, was inaugurated on Saturday by Acting Mayor Aindra Bikram Begha.
A three-story terminal building with a basement has been constructed in the bus park, built on about 27 acres of land. The bus park has the capacity to park 38 buses and 18 jeeps, Land Rovers, and taxis at a time. There is also the facility of underground parking. Due to a case pending in the Supreme Court, some parts of the south-west side are yet to be constructed, said Suraj Shrestha, senior engineer of Dharan Sub-metropolitan City.
A parking arrangement, two vehicle entry ramps, two stairs, and a structure that can be installed with a lift in the future have been constructed in the basement of the bus park. The ground floor has a passenger waiting room with a capacity of 105 seats, 25 ticket counters, ATM, CCTV and security room, public toilets for women, men and disabled people, first aid room, minimart and other commercial spaces that can be operated for rent.
On the first floor, 14 commercial shutters, 12 lodge rooms with attached toilets, restaurants, coffee shops, open commercial areas and a bus park management office have been arranged.
The bus park premises have a capacity to park about 38 large buses and 18 jeeps. In addition, public toilets and a drinking water and fire fighting tank with a capacity of 80,000 liters have been constructed, informed Engineer Shrestha.
Acting Mayor Begha said that the total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 337 million 47 thousand 238. Although the initial contract agreement was for Rs 254 million 41 million 67 thousand 319, it was fixed at Rs 249 million 1 million 3 thousand 958 after revision. He informed that Rs. 248.6 million 9 thousand 149 have been spent on the project so far.
The contract for this bus park was signed on Asad 30, 2078 BS. He said that although the project was targeted to be completed on Asad 30, 2081 BS, the deadline had to be extended by nine months due to the interim order of the Biratnagar High Court.
The sub-metropolitan city has stated that the contract for the construction of the smart bus park was completed by Bikoi-Gitanjali JV, Duhabi, Sunsari. Former mayor Tilak Rai, deputy mayor Manju Bhandari, ward chairmen of Dharan and others were present at the inauguration program.
The concept of relocating the bus park to Dharan was put forward in 2058 BS with the aim of finding an alternative to the cramped bus park at Bhanuchok. After about two decades, the plan has finally been realized and the smart bus park with modern facilities has finally come into operation. Acting Mayor Begha said that this is expected to facilitate public transport management and provide safe, organized and convenient services to passengers.
