After shops and canteens located within the Biratnagar Airport premises were found to be charging consumers more than the maximum retail price (MRP), the administration has imposed a fine of Rs 1.2 million on four traders during a random inspection.
During the inspection conducted on Tuesday under the leadership of the District Administration Office, Morang, it was found that various shops operating within the airport were selling goods at prices up to double the MRP.
According to the inspection team, Mamata Hotel, operating in the boarding hall, was found to be selling Dairy Milk Chocolate worth Rs 100 for Rs 200. Similarly, Galaxy Cafe and Hotel Pvt. Ltd., located in the airport canteen, was found to be selling Coca-Cola worth Rs 50 for Rs 160.
Similarly, Garima Cafe, operating within the airport premises, was selling Coca-Cola worth Rs 50 for Rs 80, and Anuksha Hotel and Kitchen was selling chocolate worth Rs 8 for Rs 17.69, the inspection revealed.
After it was found that the goods were sold at a price higher than the MRP, thereby defrauding the consumers, all the four traders were found guilty under Section 38, Clause (e) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2075 BS, and each trader was fined Rs 300,000 as per Section 39, Sub-section (1), Clause (b) of the same Act, said Santosh Ghimire, Administrative Officer of the Administration Office. A total of Rs 1.2 million in revenue has been collected for this.
