The Sankhuwasabha police have arrested a man who was absconding after raping a mentally retarded woman 14 years ago.

According to the Sankhuwasabha District Police Office, Dorna Prasad Pokharel, 56, the absconding defendant who was sentenced to 10 years in prison in a rape case as per the verdict of the Sankhuwasabha District Court on Chaitra 29, 2071, has been arrested. According to DSP Kumar Prasad Mainali, he is a resident of Khamare, formerly Bana VDC-6, currently Panchkhapan Municipality-5.

A team led by Senior Constable Suryanarayan Shrestha from the Bana Area Police Office arrested him while he was hiding in the Sundar Haraicha Municipality-7 area of ​​Morang, according to the police.

According to the police, Pokharel was absconding after a case was filed against him for raping a mentally retarded woman 14 years ago. Although the court found him guilty and sentenced him to 10 years in prison, he had been on the absconding list for a long time as the verdict could not be implemented.

After intensifying the search based on special information, the police succeeded in taking him under control from Morang. The arrested Pokharel has been brought to Sankhuwasabha and preparations are underway to complete the legal process and present him before the district court, the police said.

The arrest of the accused, who has been absconding for a long time, has helped in the implementation of the court's verdict and the victim is also believed to feel justice, the police said.

The District Police Office, Sankhuwasabha, has stated that it is continuing the search and arrest campaign for the absconding defendants.
