A video is currently going viral on social media alleging abuse of a doctor. The incident is being discussed from various angles, from social media to tea shops in the market. This particular video is of an incident that took place at Katari Hospital in Udayapur. What happened?
A co-driver died after falling from a moving school bus in Giddhabar, Katari Municipality-2, Udayapur on Monday. The co-driver, 31-year-old Uttam Thapa of Katari Municipality-2, was seriously injured after falling from the bus while the bus of Saugat Academy Boarding School was going to Belsot to pick up a student. He was taken to Katari Hospital for treatment, but died during treatment.
While the body of the deceased was at the hospital for post-mortem, relatives and locals were angry due to some technical reasons. Since it was summer, the refrigerator used to preserve the body was unused, so the body started to smell.
Relatives and locals had complained to the hospital's chief doctor Gaurav Sah about the management of the hospital. Sah had said that the refrigerator had broken down due to a power supply problem and efforts were being made to repair it. However, the relatives and locals, angered by the loss of a family member, had argued with Dr. Sah for some time.
When the crowd did not calm down, Dr. Sah said, "Don't keep the body of your relative here. If so, where will you take it?". Then the crowd became even angrier and the relatives of the deceased took the body from the postmortem room and took it to the emergency ward. After that, the hospital staff, doctors and Dr. Sah questioned the relatives and locals about why they were keeping the body in the emergency ward. The relatives and locals became even angrier. The hospital premises became tense for some time.
As the dispute escalated, the police pacified the crowd. Chief Sah complained on social media that he would no longer work at Katari Hospital, saying that he had been mistreated over a technical problem at the hospital. He said that the incident was politicized by some people to fulfill their interests and there was even an attempt to assault the doctors to weaken their morale.
DSP Umendra Kharel of the Katari Area Police Office said that further investigation into the incident is underway and the bus driver, Chhatra Bahadur Karki, 48, of Katari Municipality-2, has been taken into custody. Mayor Rajesh Chandra Shrestha said that although the incident is being debated from various angles, efforts are being made to resolve it by discussing with all the stakeholders and that the service flow environment of the hospital will not be allowed to deteriorate. Hospital Chief Sah said that he had been mistreated in a planned manner and that he would no longer work at Katari Hospital.
