Armed Police Constable Sushil Thamsuhang, working at Himshikhar Gulma in Phidim, beat up an elderly couple from Phalelung 5 on Saturday midnight.

He beat up 72-year-old Bil Bahadur Thamsuhang and his wife Manimaya Thamsuhang, residents of Prangbung, for piling stones on the road.

While returning home from a football tournament held in Phalelung-3, Bil Bahadur said that he found them piling stones on the road near their house and beat them up while they were sleeping. Although Sushil accused them of piling stones, Thamsuhang said that they were not in a condition to carry stones and pile them on the road and did not do so. 'He came drunk, asked why they piled stones on the road, and even when he said no, he did not stop throwing stones, he kept on beating them,' Thamsuhang said.

Bil Bahadur has suffered injuries to his cheek, knee and chest due to the beating. Bil Bahadur's health condition is somewhat critical, while Manimaya's is normal. Both are being taken to Panchthar District Hospital for treatment, said his son Subash Thamsuhang.

Sushil, who beat him, is related to Bil Bahadur and Manimaya's grandson. As soon as the incident was reported, a team deployed from the Prangwung Police Station took Sushil under control and sent him along with the elderly couple to the District Police Office, said Panchthar Superintendent of Police (DSP) Anish Kumar Karna.

Thamsuhang, who beat him, is posted at the Himshikhar Gulma of the Armed Police Force in Phidim and is currently working at the Border Outpost Bhaise. Deputy Superintendent of Armed Police Force Chiranjibi Prasai confirmed that Thamsuhang is posted at the Border Outpost and is posted at the same Thamsuhang Gulma.

However, he said that he was not aware of the assault on the senior citizen couple. Prasai also said that he would take departmental action against him after understanding the facts of the incident.
