Dr. Binita Thapa of Mechi Eye Hospital, Jhapa, has performed eye surgeries on 132 people in five days after reaching Taplejung from Jhapa. She performed eye surgeries for five days in Taplejung district headquarters Phungling and Meringden Rural Municipality-3 Khamlung Dobhan. Only one day was kept vacant in the camp, which was three hours apart. She spent seven days even while removing the surgical bandages and conducting tests. The camp was organized by Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh Taplejung and with the financial support of Sewa Foundation and Meringden Rural Municipality in Dobhan on April 21 and 22 and in the district headquarters Phungling from 24 to 26. Its technical support was provided by Mechi Eye Hospital. Dr. Binita was the medical leader of the camp. A team of 13 people, including assistants and health workers, was deployed in the camp. ‘The doctor’s job is to perform surgery and then remove the bandage the next day to see how it went and provide necessary advice,’ said Kazi Gurung, clinic in-charge of Nepal Netrajyoti Sangh Taplejung. ‘All those who underwent surgery have responded well.’

Gurung said that those who underwent surgery will be sent home after removing the bandage and will be called for re-examination within seven to 15 days. For such follow-up, they should come to the district headquarters Phungling or Dobhan treatment center. Gurung said that if someone is disabled, the technical team also visits their homes to conduct the examination.

The association’s Taplejung president Rajkumar Gurung informed that medicines, glasses and other materials were distributed free of cost in the free camp.

The association has stated that 73 people underwent surgery in the district headquarters Phungling and 59 in Dobhan in the camp conducted this time. In the district headquarters, 60 people underwent cataract surgery and 13 underwent minor surgery. In the district headquarters, 591 people underwent eye examination and treatment. In Dobhan, 43 people underwent cataract surgery and 16 underwent general surgery, informed Mechi Eye Hospital Program Director Kabita Karki Kadaria.
