A 'Shubha Yatra' campaign has been launched in Udayapur for road safety. The campaign was launched after a large number of accidents occurred on the Udayapur section of the Madan Bhandari Highway, causing damage to property and lives.

In coordination with the District Traffic Office, Udayapur, road safety campaigners have been giving messages related to accident reduction and alerting drivers and passengers by saying 'Shubha Yatra', campaigner Rama Magar said.

This campaign, which was launched with the aim of spreading it across the country, is currently being held in the vicinity of Udayapurgadhi Rural Municipality-7, Andheri, the place where the most accidents occur. The three-kilometer road from Andheri to Jogitol, going from west to east, is downhill, extremely winding and slippery. There are records of the highest number of accidents there. The traffic police have called that place "black sport". Traffic police constable Nischal Subedi, who is working on the campaign, said that the campaign launched now has reduced accidents and spread traffic awareness.

In the last three fiscal years since the operation of the Madanbhandari Highway, 118 people have lost their lives and 1,739 people have been injured in 876 accidents in Udayapur alone. Small and big, from two-wheelers to four-wheelers, 45 people have lost their lives and 436 people have been injured in accidents. In the fiscal year 2080/081, 203 accidents resulted in 25 deaths and 436 people were injured.

In the fiscal year 2081/082, 300 accidents resulted in 36 deaths and 632 people were injured. Similarly,  In the fiscal year 2082/083, 373 accidents resulted in 37 deaths and 671 people were injured.

‘Since the number of accidents is high, it is considered necessary to adopt vigilance and spread awareness,’ said campaigner Magar. An effort has been made to make the campaign a common one for all road stakeholders. Locals have also joined hands with the campaign, and drivers and passengers have expressed happiness.

Dhirendra Rai, a driver from Damak who was travelling from Kathmandu to his home, said that this campaign made him feel safe on the road. ‘The campaign, which was started with such good intentions for us, has inspired us to be cautious and not to be careless,’ he said.

It has been determined that the cause of the accident is not only the carelessness of the driver but also the condition of the road. It has been found that new drivers are involved in a large number of accidents due to excessive speeding and lack of balance on uphill and downhill. The local administration and local levels are taking initiatives with the government to improve roads and turns. The number of accidents and loss of property are increasing due to the lack of attention for years. The locals expect the government to address the accident problem here through the current campaign as well.
