Halesi Tuwachung Municipality is going to build houses for the residents displaced from Kathmandu. The municipality will provide assistance to the residents of Halesi Tuwachung who have been displaced from various squatter settlements in Kathmandu if they want to build houses in their villages.

According to Bimala Rai, the mayor of Halesi Tuwachung Municipality, the displaced people who want to come back to their villages but do not have a house after the bulldozer was used in various squatter settlements in Kathmandu will be provided with houses. Rai said that the municipal executive meeting on Wednesday decided to provide assistance of up to 500,000 rupees for the construction of houses.

‘If the residents of our city who have been displaced from the slums of Kathmandu want to stay in the village and do not have a house, it has been decided to provide assistance of up to Rs 500,000 in the construction of houses,’ Rai said. ‘In addition to that, if they want to build a house with a higher investment, the city will provide up to Rs 500,000.’

A committee has been formed under the coordination of Deputy Mayor Ramesh Raut, including City Spokesperson Kamal Giri and City Employee Sunil Rijal, to identify the displaced. The committee will invite applications from the displaced who want to stay in the village and select the actual displaced from among those who apply and provide assistance in the construction of houses, Deputy Mayor Ramesh Raut said.

Since the municipality has already constructed houses for 3 homeless families, the municipality spokesperson Kamal Giri said that the displaced slum dwellers will also be constructed houses based on the same criteria. "The municipality has already built houses for three homeless families," Giri said. "We will also build houses for the displaced squatters based on the same criteria."
