A three-day workshop for Dalit women from 14 districts of Koshi Province has begun in Biratnagar on Monday with the aim of promoting inclusive governance, women empowerment and Dalit-friendly schemes.
More than 100 women participated in the program organized by the Dalit Women's Association (FEDO) with the support of the Ministry of Social Development. FEDO's Morang President Sarmila Pariyar said that the workshop was conducted with the aim of uniting against caste-based untouchability and discrimination and ensuring rights.
Koshi Province's Social Development Minister Ram Prasad Mahato said that Dalits should demand and fight for their rights if necessary. 'Rights should be demanded, if not given, then fight,' he said.
Dalit rights activists allege that the Dalit empowerment bill under preparation in Koshi Province has not progressed due to the non-cooperation of Chief Minister Hikmat Karki and Minister Mahato.
At the program, founding central president Durga Shob said that even though the patterns of discrimination are changing in society, its roots still remain. She pointed out the need for Dalit women to organize and raise their voices for their rights.
Central General Secretary Renu Sijapati and FEDO Koshi President Pandu Pariyar also stressed that although the form of discrimination has changed, it still persists in practice, emphasizing the need to end it through awareness and empowerment.
The women participating in the three-day workshop will be trained on leadership development, knowledge about rights, and implementation of Dalit-friendly schemes at the local level, said FEDO program coordinator Nar Bahadur Auji.
