With the risk of bird flu spreading in neighboring districts increasing, the transportation of chickens, chicks and poultry products has been banned in Panchthar for 15 days. The meeting of the Bird Flu Coordination Committee, Panchthar, has decided to do so.

To implement the decision of the committee, the Veterinary Hospital and Animal Service Expert Center, Panchthar, has issued a public notice stating that the risk of bird flu disease in Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari districts is also high in Panchthar, stating that the risk of infection spreading is high due to the road network and commercial traffic connected to the district.

The meeting has banned the transportation of chickens, chicks and poultry meat for 15 days with immediate effect to prevent infection. Similarly, it has been asked to bring certified documents and health certificates from the Animal Service Office of the concerned district when bringing eggs and other poultry products from infected districts. It has been said that such products cannot be brought into the district without documents.

It has been requested to stop even carrying small quantities of chickens or chicks by passengers in vehicles, said Ram Narayan Sah, head of the Veterinary Hospital and Animal Service Expert Center, Panchthar.

He also said that farmers in the border areas have been urged to regularly monitor the chickens in their farms, contact the Animal Services Office for sample testing, and immediately inform them if there is an unnatural death in the chickens. They have been asked to be alert as the infection can also spread through visiting birds that come to natural lakes or reservoirs.

Keeping in mind the potential risk of the disease, surveillance has been increased throughout the district. ‘The cooperation of all stakeholders and citizens is necessary to prevent the spread of the infection,’ he said. Thousands of chickens have died in Jhapa, Morang, and Sunsari due to the bird flu threat that has spread in the past few weeks. It is said that lakhs of chickens and ducks have been destroyed for control and hundreds of farms have been sealed.
