The Nepal-India border is being sealed from midnight on Monday, targeting the assembly elections to be held in West Bengal, India, from April 23 to 26. Voting will be held in 16 districts including Darjeeling on April 23, i.e., April 10.

According to the District Administration Office, Jhapa, the border crossings of Kakadbhitta and Bhadrapur in Jhapa and Pashupatinagar in Ilam, which connect the border with Darjeeling district of West Bengal, will be sealed for 72 hours.

Keeping in mind the security sensitivity during the election period, Chief District Officer Shivaram Gelal said that the border is being sealed in coordination with the security agencies of both countries. 'The official letter from the Indian district chief has not arrived,' said Praji Gelal, 'There is a tradition of sealing during elections in neighboring countries, and it has been continued.'

According to the District Administration Office, when the border is closed, all movement other than essential will be completely banned. In particular, the general public has been requested not to travel unnecessarily, while arrangements for movement for emergency services, health-related reasons or essential government work will be made through coordination.

As per the practice of tightening the border areas to make the elections to be held on the Indian side peaceful and fair, this time too, the Kakadbhitta-Panitanki, Bhadrapur-Galgaliya and Pashupatinagar-Phatak checkpoints have been closed and surveillance has been increased.

Elections in 16 districts in the first phase

Voting is being held in 152 seats in 16 districts under the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections on April 23, i.e. April 10.

It is estimated that about 36 million voters will participate in the elections. According to the State Election Commission, West Bengal, central security forces have been mobilized at all polling stations and security arrangements have been tightened. Elections will be held in Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and Dinajpur districts of North Bengal.

The elections will be held on the same day in Purulia, Bankura, Jhadgram and West Medinipur, Malda and Murshidabad, which are under the Jangalmahal constituency. Similarly, some areas of East Burdwan and Nadia have also declared voting in the first phase.
