After climbing about 2 kilometers from Pauwabhanjyang, which is touched by the Mechi Highway, you reach Sukepokhari. From here, after taking the forest path and climbing up, you will find a large area of forest covered with various types of flowers.
Not only the plants and tops of the flowers, but also the ground looks colorful with the flowers that have fallen. Sukepokhari, Lohakil and Deurali areas, the confluence of Phidim Municipality-14 of Panchthar, Falgunanda Rural Municipality-3 and Deumai Municipality of Ilam, have started to attract crowds just to see the flowers. The flowers have started blooming here since mid-Chaitum. The blooming flowers have made the hills here look like night.
Those who have arrived here say that they are attracted not only by the lush green trees but also by the old artistic forest and the dense forest where the birds keep chirping. The thick tree trunks, wide branches, and moss growing on almost all the trees in the forest attract tourists.
Recently, a large number of domestic tourists have come to this area to see these sights. In addition to Ilam and Panchthar, there are also a large number of people from Jhapa and Morang who have reserved vehicles to see the forest. There is also an equal number of people who go here to take photos and videos with the forest and have a forest feast. ‘It seemed difficult to climb uphill at first, but once you reach it, you don’t even notice the day has passed. The forest painted with guarans is beautiful,’ said Jenisa Khadka, who arrived here from Dhulabari in Jhapa. ‘When you enter the forest, you will feel relaxed and your fatigue will be gone.’
Sujan Khadka of Phidim, who was climbing uphill with his family, said that not only the blooming guarans but also the artistic trees and bushes and the dense forest of guarans made it fascinating. Pujan Chhetri, who came from Rong in Ilam with his friends, was also very excited to see the guarans forest. ‘I have already seen one or two tufts of guarans, I was surprised to see the old trees and the large forest for the first time,’ he said.
Local home stay operator Madan Rai said that thousands of tourists have arrived from Panchthar, Ilam, Jhapa and Morang as well as surrounding districts this year. According to him, many people come here during the flowering of the Gurans. He said, ‘Those who come to visit stay at homestays at night and leave for the forest again in the morning.’
Around 15 homestays are being operated in this area targeting tourists. In some places in the forest, the Gurans flowers have fallen, turning the ground black, while in others, the entire hill is painted with flowers blooming all over the trees.
