23 newspapers, online and FM radios operating in the district have submitted a letter of protest to Chief District Officer Sirjana Thapaliya on Wednesday, expressing strong dissatisfaction with the new decision on government advertisements.
The media organizations of the district have united in protest after the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers decided to 'publish/broadcast government information and advertisements only in government media' through a circular issued on Chaitra 18, 2082.
Local media workers have said that the decision will systematically marginalize private and local media, weaken them financially, and create indirect pressure on independent journalism.
The letter of protest states that such a policy is not only against democratic values, but also a direct interference in press freedom.
As mentioned in the letter of protest, the media outlets operating in Sankhuwasabha have been playing an important role in delivering state information to the citizens. But media workers have expressed concern that the new decision indicates that their very existence is in danger.
Media organizations have made it clear that such a 'discriminatory and undemocratic' decision will not be acceptable under any circumstances and have warned of a phased protest if it is not immediately revoked.
Along with the Chief District Officer, they have also submitted a letter of appeal to the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Sankhuwasabha.
Meanwhile, the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Sankhuwasabha, has also submitted a memorandum to the Minister of Communications through the Chief District Officer on Wednesday in support of the local media.
