About 400 people have been operated on in a year at the District Hospital Taplejung. During this period, people who came for treatment have undergone simple to complex surgeries. Earlier, only pregnant women were operated on. The hospital has stated that complex surgeries have been started since the arrival of surgeon Pranam Jayaru in 2081 Falgun. According to the district hospital, 393 people have been operated on in a year. Of which 165 have undergone major surgeries, 118 have undergone moderate surgeries, and 110 have undergone general surgeries. Major surgeries include appendicitis, hernia, hydrocele, multiple injuries, etc. Earlier, patients had to travel to Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and other Terai districts to perform such surgeries. Some used to travel to the federal capital Kathmandu even if it was by road.

Depending on the patient's condition, major surgeries at the hospital cost between 10,000 and 20,000 rupees. Apart from these, 20 people whose financial situation is normal, who need immediate surgery but cannot pay the fee, were also operated on free of cost, informed the hospital's chief physician Jayaru. According to him, the number of people who underwent free surgery is beyond 393.

Kshitij Sunuwar, coordinator of the Phungling Municipality Social Development Committee, said that upon hearing about the surgery, people get panicked, many family members take the patient with them, and a large amount of money is spent when the patient has to stay in the hospital. 'It is a painful situation that some people sell cows and buffaloes to go for surgery,' he said, 'Many people have been relieved to get surgery services at the district hospital.'
