The construction of a modern waste management center (Waste Management Center) has been started in Duhabi Municipality of Sunsari with the aim of solving waste management in the long term.

The foundation stone of the project was laid by Duhabi Municipality Mayor Bednarayan Gachhadar and First Secretary of the Indian Embassy Narayan Singh on Sunday. The project, named ‘Construction of Waste Management Center with Material Recovery Facility and Equipment Supply’, is being implemented in collaboration with the Indian Embassy and Duhabi Municipality.

The center, whose construction has begun in Duhabi-4, aims to systematize the increasing waste management in the city area. The project is expected to be completed within the next 2 years.

The total cost of the project, for which Siddhartha Darshan-Churia JV has been awarded the contract, is around Rs 183.568 crore, informed Chief Administrative Officer Suvarna Ghimire. According to Ghimire, the construction of this center will facilitate waste classification, recycling and safe management. It is expected to make a significant contribution to environmental protection and cleanliness of the city.

Earlier, in October last year, an agreement was signed by the Government of India for an investment of Rs 183.568 crore to operate the waste processing center in a modern and systematic manner. The tripartite agreement regarding this investment was attended by the Ministry of Finance of the Government of Nepal, the Indian Embassy and Mayor Gachhadar of Duhabi Municipality.

Mayor Gachhadar said that the foundation stone of the center was laid on Sunday in accordance with the same agreement. Gachhadar said that this is the first time since 2046 BS that such a large-scale project has been invested in Duhabi. First Secretary Singh of the Indian Embassy said that this project is being operated under the High Impact Community Development Program.
