Panchthar district, which has only one constituency, is set to have three MPs, including a woman MP, in the House of Representatives for the first time since 2015.
On Thursday, two MPs elected under the proportional representation system received certificates from the Election Commission, bringing the number of MPs representing the district in the federal parliament to three.
Narendra Kumar Kerung of the Nepali Congress was elected directly from here, while Bhishma Raj Angdembe of the Congress and Bhumika Nembang of the UML were elected through the proportional representation system. Previously, there was never any female representation in the federal parliament from the district.
In the first parliamentary election held in 2015 after the end of the Rana regime, there was only one constituency in the district. At that time, Prem Raj Angdembe of the Congress was elected.
After the democratic movement of 2046, along with the general elections of 2048 and 2056, two constituencies were established in the district in the mid-term elections of 2051. At that time, 2 people each were represented in the federal parliament from the district.
In 2048, Constituency No. Basant Kumar Nembang from Constituency No. 1, Dambar Singh Sambahamphe (NCP-UML) from Constituency No. 2 was elected. In the 2051 mid-term elections, Deepak Prakash Baskota (Congress) and Padyam Sundar Lawati (RPP) were elected.
Basant Kumar Nembang and Dambar Singh Sambahamphe of UML were elected again in the 2056 general elections. Similarly, in the 2064 Constituent Assembly elections, Purna Kumar Sherma (Congress) won from Constituency No. 1, Dambar Singh Sambahamphe (UML) from Constituency No. 2.
2070 Constituent Assembly: Ganesh Kumar Kambang (UML) from Constituency No. 1, Bhishma Raj Angdembe (Congress) from Constituency No. 2 and through the proportional system, Shri Prasad Jabegu (Maoist) and Aindra Sundar Nembang (NCP-ML) became members of the Constituent Assembly.
Even though four members were elected in both the historic Constituent Assembly elections, women were not represented.
After the state restructuring, Panchthar was again limited to a single constituency. Then in 2074 and 2079, Basant Kumar Nembang of UML was directly elected from here, but no proportional MP was elected from any party.
Previously, all the MPs elected to the federal parliament were only men. This time, Bhumika Nembang of UML was elected through the proportional system. She has become the first woman MP to represent the district in the federal parliament.
In the Koshi Provincial Assembly, Maiya Shrestha Lawati of the Nepali Congress is a member. In 2074, Asharatna Jabegu (UML) and Sita Thebe (Maoist) were provincial assembly members from the then Province No. 1.
Similarly, Panchthar is also the birthplace of Samiksha Baskota and Tika Sangraula (Jwala), who were elected through the proportional system from the National Independent Party. However, since they migrated elsewhere after marriage, they are not active in the development and politics of the district.
According to Govinda Prasad Guragain, former head of Panchthar Multiple Campus, it is not a small matter that so many MPs have been elected from Panchthar. He suggests that the elected MPs should work responsibly in lawmaking, including the development of the district and meeting the needs of the people.
