Nepali Communist Party (NCP) Secretariat member Jagannath Khatiwada has said that the current situation in Dharan is not in line with the reality experienced by the citizens in their daily lives, rather than the superficial development.
Addressing the NCP election rally held in Dharan on Sunday, he commented that Dharan city is losing its old identity due to unplanned development, unorganized expansion and poor management. ‘Dharan needs revival, the Dharan seen from outside and the Dharan experienced from inside are different,’ he said.
According to him, sustainable transformation of the city is not possible if development is limited to roads, buildings and structures. He said that a development model linked to education, health, social justice, employment, culture and economic self-reliance is necessary.
Khatiwada mentioned that Dharan, which was established as an education, sports and business center of eastern Nepal in the past, is now struggling with traffic chaos, narrow roads, drinking water problems and urban management challenges. He said that Dharan can become an economic center again if religious and touristic potentials like Pindeshwor Temple, Buddha Subba Temple and Bhedetar are systematically utilized.
In the political context, he said that nation-building is possible only through politics based on ideas and policies rather than crowds and popular slogans. He said that ideological clarity is necessary to protect the country from economic dependence, corruption and external influences.
At the meeting, he mentioned that the NCP has made Manoj Bhattarai its candidate with the star symbol and said that capable, planned and responsible leadership is needed for the reconstruction of Dharan. During the program, he alluded to former mayor of Dharan Sub-metropolitan City Hark Sampang and expressed the view that institutional development and sustainable planning are more important than personal popularity.
At the meeting, youth representative Yubaraj Alokik said that the youth generation expects good governance, transparency and corruption-free leadership and said that Manoj Bhattarai is a candidate of hope for the youth.
NCP candidate Manoj Bhattarai said that truth, justice, democracy and the welfare of the community are greater than winning and losing. He said, "I have not risen to defeat anyone, but to ensure the development and prosperity of Dharan." He said that Sunsari-1 will be made a center of development, prosperity and social justice, ensuring the rights of the landless, squatters, workers and marginalized communities.
