The bailey bridge over the Arun River connecting Makalu Rural Municipality-Num to Seduwa in Sankhuwasabha collapsed on Saturday morning. DSP Kumar Prasad Mainali of the District Police Office Sankhuwasabha informed that the bridge collapsed along with the vehicle while heavy vehicles were being transported.
According to locals, the structure suddenly collapsed while a heavy vehicle carrying construction materials was crossing the bridge in the morning. With the collapse of the bridge, the Num-Seduwa road section has been completely blocked and movement has come to a standstill.
The famous tourist destination Makalu Base Camp is used to travel through the route. The collapse of the bridge has directly affected the transportation of local residents, tourists and daily necessities.
The police have stated that initial information has been received that there was no human casualty in the incident. However, it is said that it is not possible to bring the bridge into operation immediately as it is completely damaged.
According to DSP Mainali, coordination is being done to repair the bridge and make alternative arrangements. He said that discussions are being held with Kasuwa Hydropower in particular regarding maintenance.
The bailey bridge over the Arun River is considered important not only for the residents of the Makalu area but also for tourism and development. After the bridge collapsed, locals have demanded the construction of a permanent and safe structure. A police team is currently deployed at the scene to collect more details and manage security.
