In the voting held in Koshi Province on Sunday to elect members of the National Assembly, 258 votes were cast for the local level and 87 for the Provincial Assembly.

There were 274 voters at the local level and 93 in the provincial assembly. According to the voting system, 19 are designated for the local level and 53 for the province.

After the voting is completed, an all-party meeting will be held and the counting will begin, said Cholaram Dangal, head of the provincial election office.

The number of votes decreased due to the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) boycotting the voting. The RPP had stated that it would not participate in the National Assembly elections and would boycott the voting as per the decision of the central committee.  In accordance with this decision, five RPP provincial assembly members, including Koshi Province Speaker Amber Bahadur Bista, did not vote.

The provincial assembly members who boycotted the voting include Speaker Bista, Gopal Bahadur Bishwakarma, Neemsari Rajbanshi, Premraj Thamsuhang and Sabina Bajgain. Bhakti Prasad Sitaula, one of the six members elected from the RPP to the Koshi Provincial Assembly, has resigned from his post after running for the House of Representatives election from Jhapa-4.

Along with the provincial assembly members, local level people's representatives elected from the RPP have also boycotted the vote. Those boycotting include Damak Municipality Mayor Ram Kumar Thapa, Bhadrapur Municipality Deputy Mayor Radha Karki, Haldibari Rural Municipality Chairman Rabindra Prasad Lingden and Vice Chairman Laxmi Devi Mainali.

The UML-Congress alliance had fielded Som Portel and Roshni Meche, while the NCP had fielded Khemraj Sundas and Namita Neupane. The alliance's candidate, Sunil Thapa, has already been elected unopposed.
