A mother and son have died after a pickup truck and a passenger bus collided on the East-West Highway in Naya Basti, Kankai Municipality-3, Jhapa. Twelve passengers have been injured.
According to the police, a pickup truck (goods carrier) with registration number Me 1 Cha 4515, which was heading towards Maidhar from Birtamod, and a bus with registration number Na 5 Kha 2149, which was coming from Maidhar to Birtamod, collided with each other at around 9:30 am on Thursday. Among the injured in the accident, 40-year-old Sushma Rajbanshi, a resident of Bhadrapur Municipality, and her one-and-a-half-year-old son Aaruti Rajbanshi died. The District Police Office, Jhapa, has stated that the injured in the accident died during treatment at B&C Hospital. The pickup driver, 39-year-old Zakir Hussain, a resident of Birtamod Municipality-6, and 12 other passengers in the pickup were injured in the accident. The police have stated that the condition of some of the injured is serious, some moderate and some normal.
Among the injured, Phulmuni Murmu, Jamuna Rajbanshi and 11-year-old Anish Rajbanshi are undergoing treatment at B&C Hospital, Birtamod. The other injured are undergoing treatment at Birta City Hospital, Birtamod. The seriously injured are Afad Rajbanshi and Pathal Rajbanshi.
Both vehicles involved in the accident have been taken into police custody. The bus driver is absconding after the incident, and a search operation is underway, according to the District Police Office, Jhapa. Further investigation is underway into the cause of the accident, the police have informed.
